SPRING BREAK!!!

Hallelujah! I FINALLY figured out what I was doing wrong and I can once again post photos. So, I had to share our "first day of Spring Break" photos. We had a mini heat wave on Fri and Sat with temps in the upper 80's or low 90's - HOT! So yesterday we got out the little backyard pool.
The water was FREEZING...so cold that Rachel cried when we tried to put her in. But Dad and the kids were game!

Charlie attempted a backflip into the pool so,
of course Hannah had to try too.
I was SO HOT, I finally decided to get in to cool off a little bit. AND THEN
CJ offered me $100 to completely submerge myself. Easiest $100 I ever made. I can't believe he didn't think I would do it.
So, here I am, soaking wet and $100 richer and my kids thought it was the funniest thing ever to have mom in the pool with her clothes on. Now, we'll see if I ever get my money...

Hannah's Birthday Party

I've been trying to post pictures from Hannah's party for 3 days now and for some reason, I can't seem to get them to upload to blogger. It's driving me crazy. Stay tuned and maybe you'll see some shots from her fun party last Friday. And maybe you won't. Grrrr!

Emily's tag

Emily had this cute tag on her blog so even tho I wasn't "tagged" since I don't have a blog, I thought I would do it here anyway.

Grab the book nearest you.
Go to page 123.
Go to the 5th sentence on the page.
Type in the following 3 sentences.
I just started reading this book because I really want to see the movie, so here's the quote from page 123:
At once she twisted it behind my back and held me so that I could move neither forward nor backward but only cry out in pain: "Anne! Don't! You're really hurting!"

Allergies

Whelp, we got back from the allergist today and it looks like Charlie is allergic to almost everything known to man.

Not really, but I'm really struggling trying to think of what I'm going to make for dinner. This is a list of foods that need to be completely eliminated from his diet for the next 3 months:

  • Rice
  • Chicken
  • Tomatoes
  • Chocolate (& cola drinks)
  • Milk and all milk products (cheese, yogurt, ice cream)
  • Yeast (all breads, tortillas etc.)
  • Strawberries
  • Green beans (one of the few vegetables he used to eat)
  • Mushrooms and
  • Cinnamon

After 3 months, we can gradually start to add one food back at a time and see how he responds. He's also very allergic to grass, weeds and trees and so CJ and I will start giving him shots at home every 3 days. And he needs to take Zyrtec daily.

I know I could make ham and potatoes for him and he could eat a taco (without cheese - the Dr. said corn tortillas are okay occasionally) and he can eat pasta or noodles but no sauce or butter. If you have any great ideas or recipes, please pass them along. We're gonna need all the help we can get!

Jury Duty and Deer

Most of you know that I was on a jury this past week for a trial of a defendant accused of a double murder and attempted murder of a 3rd person (a 14 year old who was also shot and eventually also died from the effects of being shot - hit in the spine and paralyzed). It was an interesting experience but a little gruesome and distressing. It involved people who were caught up in the drug culture. What I saw certainly makes me grateful for the environment which most of us have. I will tell you there is another one out there that is really, really awful. The defendent was taught by his family how to sniff airplane glue to "get a high" when he was 12 years old. Then for over 30 years he abused various inhalants literally daily, and clearly suffered serious brain damage as a result. Without describing all the details, the trial last for 3 days (the judge had expected 4 to 6) and after four hours of deliberation, we found the defendant guilty on all counts.

Today we have had many deer in our back yard. At one point we counted over 15, including a good size buck. They are obviously very hungry after all the snow this winter and were eating along the edge of our sloping/rock wall. There is a tiny bit of new young growth this week, and they were eating everything that just beginning to poke out of the ground.

Hard lesson learned

Hannah learned a hard lesson this morning. We just got back from the store where we had gone so she could spend her birthday money. Before we left, she put some aside for tithing and savings and off we went with $23 in her little hand. We wandered all through the store and she picked a toy but when we went to pay, her money was nowhere to be found. We spent lots of time searching the aisles and we asked all the employees if any cash had been turned in (yeah, right) but no luck. We left our name and phone number at the front desk and left, with LOTS of tears, empty-handed. What a rough lesson. I'm kicking myself for not carrying the money for her - what was I thinking letting her carry it herself? But, I guess we learn from our mistakes eh?

I am a Bunco failure!

So, I was supposed to be the "host" for our Bunco group tonight. I even postponed my own daughter's 7th birthday party (it's NEXT Friday even though her birthday was this past Tuesday) in honor of Bunco. I bought the food for dinner and emailed out invites to the group. But, it was not to be.

Only 4 people from the group could attend. Everyone else, for one reason or another, couldn't come. And there was very little chance of finding 7 substitutes at the last minute. So, Bunco is being cancelled. I hope my family has a big appetite 'cuz I've got LOTS of food. Anyone want to come over?

Happy Birthday Hannah!

This post is two days late. But I wanted to wish Hannah a happy 7th birthday. Here's a recent snapshot of her and a beautiful bologna snowflake. She is very artistic and loves to create things (even out of her lunch)!

We had a fun day. After getting Charlie off to school and a quick visiting teaching visit, I picked up donuts and dropped them off at her school. Her classmates were so excited to have a treat! She got to come home with me early and was even excused from homework for the day! We offered to take her out for pizza for dinner, but she wanted to stay home and have "pink meat (ham), mashed potatoes, and green beans" all of which, luckily, I had. She opened presents and can't wait to spend her birthday money - thanks Grandma and Grandpa! Her party is next Friday night - 10 little girls, pizza and the new Barbie Mariposa movie.

Happy Birthday Hannah!

Torture

Poor Charlie spent yesterday morning at the Dr.'s office. He went to see an allergist and it was not a fun morning for him. After the urine sample, he had to have blood drawn and it was pretty traumatic. I kept asking him to look away but he seemed irresistably drawn to the needle and tube that was sucking all the blood from his little arm. Then, we headed down the hall for more torture. He was poked with 6 different squar-ish metal thingys - each with 9 needles containing little drops of oil on them. The nurse and I had to physically restrain him to keep him still. And it may have been the panic, but that little guy is stronger than I would've thought. After the long wait to see what he would react to, he got 7 substances injected just under the skin to (I think) confirm the reaction. Again, he had to be restrained to get through the 7 needles. Poor kid! On the way home, we stopped at HEB Plus so he could choose a new toy. I knew he wanted a blue light saber and I felt he had earned a little reward. Rachel was a trooper by the way - several hours in her stroller and she was VERY good.

The worst thing is that we get to go back on Monday morning to endure the entire process again with a different set of allergens. I have talked to him about it twice so he'll know it's coming. I think I'm gonna have to bribe him with another toy just to get him into the car!

i found this article on one of my new favorite blogs to read. it was interesting to me, but it also made me a little sad. sad that the norm really has changed, that families aren't like this anymore...it makes me want to work harder and be better at everything i do so people will know that it's possible to really have a good, happy family and a great life.

Did Mormons Get A Bounce From Mitt?

By Libby Copeland
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, February 8, 2008; C01

After Mitt Romney suspended his presidential campaign yesterday, in a speech praising conservative values and criticizing such scourges as liberal judges and France, the question became:

So, was it good for the Mormons?

The Jews like asking that question about themselves. They asked it a lot after Joe Lieberman ran for vice president in 2000, and it was never quite resolved to everyone's satisfaction. (Others are easier. Monica Lewinsky: Bad for the Jews.) Can you blame any minority for asking such a question about themselves? Who doesn't want to be loved?

"Mormons were chased out of the Midwest in the 1840s, and ever since then they've been looking to America for approval," says Bengt Washburn, a Mormon who is also a full-time comedian. (There aren't a lot of those, by the way. In case you were wondering.) Washburn says Mormons he knows will constantly list examples of mainstream Mormons to outsiders. Gladys Knight is a Mormon! Steve Young is a Mormon! Donny! Marie!

It's as if to say, "'See? Mormons aren't weird,'" Washburn says. "Well, yeah, we're weird." But here's the thing, the comedian adds: "All theology standing next to logic is weird."

Maybe that was Romney's mistake, that he tried to make his religion sound palatable to evangelical ears, that he didn't just say that sure, some of my beliefs may sound incredible to outsiders, but then again, a lot of the doings in Bible stories sound incredible to outsiders. (And, as historian Jan Shipps points out, Mormonism is a young faith. The earliest Christians were reviled, too.) But politics doesn't permit that sort of honesty any more than it allows a candidate to say, "My faith is private, okay?"

The truth is, Mormonism is in many ways the epitome of what was considered normalcy, back before the '60s upended everybody's definition. With his handsome tanned face and white teeth, his five square-jawed sons, his gorgeous blond wife and daughters-in-law, his teetotaling ways, his corporate demeanor, Romney broadcast health, uprightness, a life spent on the straight-'n'-narrow.

His campaign put out an ad at one point of Romney jogging, all that fabulous hair slighty mussed. The message seemed clear: Now here is a man vigorous and disciplined. (Take that, John McCain!) Every morning on the campaign trail, he ate the granola his wife made for him herself. How consistent! How homey!

Was he too normal?

We'll come back to that.

Two big things happened to elevate the face of Mormonism in the last decade. One, of course, was Romney running for president. The other was the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002, which Romney took credit for turning around. During the Olympics, the Mormons were "wonderfully gracious" to visitors, as Shipps says, and everyone thought, wow, these Mormons aren't so weird after all.

"The result of this was that a lot of the stereotypes about Mormonism, the negative stereotypes -- that they were clannish, that they were secretive -- that sort of disappeared," says Shipps, who is one of the foremost non-Mormon scholars of the denomination.

But with Romney's candidacy, the scrutiny was different.

"I know Mormons and members of the church that felt like it was a terrible thing that Romney was running because we opened ourselves up to criticism," says Joel Campbell, a Mormon who teaches journalism at Brigham Young University.

"It certainly opens the conversation, but whether the conversation will be a friendly one or a contentious one, I'm not sure," says Shipps. "I do think it alerted a lot of upper-middle-class, exceedingly successful Mormon lawyers and doctors . . . to the reality that not everybody thinks being Mormon is great. If you grow up in the mountain West and you grow up in a Mormon community and you send your kids to church and all the kids are going to school where there's mostly Mormons and there's not a lot of drugs and there's not a lot of crime, everybody thinks, 'Oh, being Mormon is just so wonderful.' And to realize that this is a perception that is very provincial."

This is the nub of it, really. Romney seemed so Mormon, so squeaky clean, so Pollyanna-ish, even. (Remember when he went to Michigan and said he could bring those lost jobs back?) Romney's seeming normalcy isn't the norm anymore. Maybe we understand better those who've strayed or failed and recovered -- or, for that matter, those who aren't fabulously successful and can't put tens of millions into their own campaigns. Maybe we relate to the family lives of other candidates, candidates who have been divorced, who have blended families, whose children don't all campaign with them (and may not even like them). Sure, they're messier, but messy is authentic.

There was more to it than that, of course. Some evangelical voters -- who don't want messy -- see Mormonism as something other than Christianity. Mike Huckabee, an evangelical and former pastor, was speaking to them when he said, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the Devil are brothers?"

All of this gives Mormons something to chew on for years to come.

Maybe it was all for the good, no matter what, says Campbell. He quotes the prophet Brigham Young on the issue of persecution:

"Every time you kick Mormonism you kick it upstairs."

"That's kind of the optimism of Mormons," Campbell says, adding: "I guess that may sound like Pollyanna or something."

7 rules every blogger should know

i was blogstalking last night and found this. hiLARIOUS. i cannot stop laughing about it. so here is the link, and i'm posting what it says below. i'm DYING about this list. a few notes first: it was written by a man, so he doesn't sugarcoat anything, so you may be offended. oh well. just smile and laugh about it, it's supposed to be funny! also, i break several of these rules i'm sure, so i'm not taking myself out of the equation. enjoy!

1. Do not try to impress everyone with stories of a sugar-coated, make-believe life

Everyone knows who you really are and they know your life is just as dysfunctional as the rest of us. You aren't fooling anyone.

2. Don't force everyone to listen to music everytime they visit your blog

I learned this one from experience. I had songs on my own blog and even I was annoyed everytime I pulled it up.

3. No, No to Po, Po

Do not post poetry. The only exception is - UNLESS YOU ARE A GOOD POET. You may be asking, "How do I know if I am a good poet?" Just because your husband, mother, [insert any family member], tells you they like your poetry does not mean you are a good poet. In fact, the only good indication of your poetic talent comes with publication. If you have published poetry in the past, you are safe to post poetry on your blog.

4. Watch your comments

Take advantage of your administrative powers when it comes to comments. DELETE, DELETE, DELETE. If your significant other thinks it is funny to make a comment with embarrassing commentary to your posting, you have every right to eliminate it - you just do. However, you must be careful. With so much power it is easy to get carried away. You could end up using your power of deletion on innocent bystanders. This will alienate your folks. Just like any other power in life, you should be judicious.

5. Don't force it

You're not going to have something interesting EVERY SINGLE DAY. So, don't spend half your day trying to figure out how you can create some artificial event in your life just so you can blog about it. Put your camera away and do something important - like PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR KIDS. Artificial events are boring.

6. Don't send lame "tag" games

Most people, when participating, end up violating tips 1 and/or 5. This makes you an accomplice in a blogging felony.

Dunkin' Donuts - it's worth the trip

Saturday was cold and rainy. And I needed something fun to do. Your definition of fun may be different from mine, but mine always includes food. Treats to be specific. So after the kids spent their dimes, we drove to our closest Dunkin' Donuts. It's quite a trip, at least 15 minutes each way, but we had nothing else to do. (Except for yucky stuff like cleaning the office). And we bought a dozen donuts and by the time we got home only 5 were in the box. YUM! Why are they SO good?

14 February 2008

Happy Valentines Day!

Don't know why these two pictures are situated on the page like they are, but whatever, Happy Valentines Day!

Last night, I got the kids' breakfast bowls out and put a valentine and treat in each one and they were so excited this morning when they came down for breakfast.
Today, I'm missing Charlie's preschool party and Hannah's school party too - both because we are still without the van (it's been over 4 weeks now) and I have no way of getting there. Thank goodness for good friends who are driving for me today!
Instead, I'm spending the day trying to clean up our office. It's a MAJOR undertaking and will take weeks, but I listed some stuff on Craig's list a few days ago and we're getting lots of response so that's good news. And it also makes me want to sell a lot more of my junk. I have plenty you know.
Anyway, no plans for a hot date or anything, just a quiet day around the house with my little buddy Rachel keeping me entertained. Hope you have a great day full of flowers and candy and most importantly, LOVE!

13 February 2008

Dimes

We have started a new form of motivation around our house. It goes like this:

  • Every Sunday, the kids get 30 dimes from us. They go in a little container.

  • Every time I have to ask them more than once to do something, I get one of their dimes.

  • Every time they disobey or talk without kindness and/or respect (etc.), I get a dime.

  • Every time they sleep in their own bed ALL NIGHT (etc.), they get a dime.

  • Every time they fight with each other, they both lose a dime.

On Saturday morning, the kids get to decide to either save their dimes or take them somewhere for spending fun. They can choose the $1 store or a game place (similar to Chuck E. Cheese). So far, it has been strangely successful and the kids are really enjoying it. I know it may not last for long (these types of things usually don't) but I am taking advantage while it lasts. So far, Charlie has bought a star wars watch ($2.99 at Party city!) and right now he's saving up for a blue lightsaber (because 1 - or 3 in his case - just isn't enough). Hannah's been buying toy pets, mostly dogs. Also, as a random sidenote, did anyone else ever notice that the word DIME is the same as DI ME in Spanish - meaning "tell me?"

Valentines

Last night at 5:30, the doorbell rang and Hannah's first date arrived.
He even brought her a corsage with miniature pink roses and a black ribbon.
She felt pretty special. (And so did I - when I picked it up, the cashier asked me if it was for my prom. What? Do people even have prom in February? And do I look like I'm heading to prom?)
Sheesh - a kiss on the first date and they haven't even left the house yet.
On their way out the door...

And a beautiful picture from the event. CJ reported that Hannah had the time of her life (her favorite dance? The limbo). And when she told me all about it after they got home she said, "and Daddy was a perfect gentleman."

100th Day Project

Hannah just got an assignment from school - to celebrate their 100th day of class, she has to make a 3-D project with exactly 100 things. The teacher provided a few ideas: and rocket made from 100 toothpicks, a styrofoam ball with 100 cotton balls to make a poodle, or a small rainbow fish with 100 sequin scales. Items can be glued to any surface but there has to be exactly 100 of them. Oh, and no food either (Hannah's first idea included macaroni).

So, if any of you come up with any ideas in the next day or two, please post a comment and let us know. Her project is due Monday morning. Can't wait to hear from you...

Twilight - the movie

I was just checking out Stephenie Meyer's website and thought I would share the news (for any of you who might care - especially Ellen since I know she's the hugest fan of these books eh-ver!) that Kristen Stewart has been cast to play the role of BELLA SWAN in the upcoming movie version of Twilight.
And actor Robert Pattinson will star in the role of Edward Cullen. Stephenie says on her site that she's "ecstatic" about him in the role because he "can look both dangerous and beautiful at the same time." Too bad Voldemort didn't think he looked dangerous in Harry Potter #4 - he killed him with an avada kedavra easy as pie. The movie is already "in production" so I'm excited to see how long it actually takes before I can pay my money and see the Hollywood big screen version. I hope I like it as much as the book. By the way, the release date for the 4th book Breaking Dawn will be announced on Thursday the 7th.

By the way, it's obviously too late for me to still be awake because I'm getting very grouchy about the news about "Super Tuesday." What ever happened to the notion of unbiased reporting? Ugh!

High School Musical's #1 Fan

And, no I'm not talking about James, I'm talking about Caleb!!
One afternoon Caleb says, "Do you know about that movie called 'High School Musical'?" And I told him, "Yeah. In fact we have both movies (both were gifts for James at his request)." He got so excited, "WHAT?! We have High School Musical 2?"

Since that day he's been hooked. No longer does he ask, 'Can we listen to Thomas the Tank Engine or to the Polar Express', he now asks' Can we listen to High School Musical number two?'. Caleb has started learning some pretty fancy moves and loves to dance and lip sync with each song. He'll hold up an invisible microphone and move his lips as if he knows the words. Whenever one of the girls is singing he'll point to me and say, "It's your turn, Mom!" He cracks me up!

I was lucky enough to catch some footage of Caleb dancing and singing along with Troy, "Bet On It". Check it out!

Time without big brother & sister

Here's a short video clip of Rachel playing with Charlie's favorite Christmas present, an R2D2. She usually LOVES to dance with him. Do you notice she leans over to give him a kiss during their dance?

Since it's Tuesday, Charlie is at preschool and it's just me and the baby for a few hours. I love being reminded how easy one can be! This is the only time Rachel gets me all to herself and I think we both enjoy our time together. We just got back from a short walk. It's 75 degrees out and cloudy with a nice cool breeze so we walked around the block and Rachel loved it! She did NOT want to hold my hand and it was so fun to watch her explore. She would bend down and "talk" to all the weeds and some of the cracks in the sidewalk and if she saw a bird, she would get so excited! She starts to blow and then says "tweet, tweet" (or tries to anyway). She LOVES birds. She even noticed a little spider on the neighbors driveway and she couldn't stop poking it until it died. I was proud of myself for letting her get so close because it was freakin' me out! Anyway, I love this quiet(er) time with her.

My memories...

Okay, I know it's been over a week now, but I keep having thoughts about President Hinckley and I decided I wanted to say something about him since we all loved and will miss him so much. So I decided I would share two of my favorite memories of him.
First I remember a devotional at BYU that he gave that I almost didn't go to, but I ended up feeling so glad that I had. He talked about being optimistic and said that people often walked around looking as if they had been "sucking on a pickle." I thought that was so funny! And he was the perfect example to me of optimism. I wish I were better at looking at the bright side of things.
Second, when CJ and I were newlyweds and living in Chicago, he and his wife came and had a huge meeting. (I don't remember if it was a multi-stake conference or what). It was held in the arena where the Chicago Bulls play and the sound was terrible. I mean, you honestly could barely understand a word. Anyway, President Hinckley spoke first and DURING HIS TALK, random people kept screaming, "we can't hear you." So then Sis. Hinckley got up to speak and she started by saying, "we understand that many of you are having a hard time hearing us. Well, don't worry, you're not missing anything." So cute and funny. I read the book about her called "Letters" and loved it! I'm sure she was so happy to see him again. And I learned yesterday in Primary that his mother died when he was a young man (I think someone said about 77 years ago) so can you imagine what THAT reunion must've been like?
It's amazing to me how many people he touched and how many lives he influenced during his time as the prophet. Can you imagine being in heaven someday and talking with someone who lived during Moses' time or with someone who knew Alma or Samuel the Lamanite? Or with some of the pioneers who were actually acquainted with Joseph Smith? And can you imagine what it would be like to tell them about some of YOUR time on earth - when Pres. Hinckley was the prophet and all of the members read the Book of Mormon together. Or when temple truly began to dot the earth? Or when the Proclamation was given? What a blessing to have known him - even from a distance - and to have been a tiny part of "the kingdom" during his service. He was so loved and will be missed.

more snow?! and deer.

we came down for the sunday dinner yesterday to discover two feet of snow at mom and dad's house. they even cancelled church! on top of the two or so feet that was already out there, they have snow that's practically as tall as me now piled on their grass. it's nuts. the alfonso's trampoline is almost touching the ground it's so weighed down with snow. what's really weird is you can't see the rocks in the backyard except for the two in this picture so it just looks like a giant wall of snow. this is the craziest winter i've ever been through.

there was a deer in the backyard for part of the day, he was HUGE and was eating pine needles off the pinetree. yuck. he must be very hungry. the snow was up to his stomach in the backyard, it was so crazy.

No snow in our town!

We've been enjoying some nice weather for the past two days. By 9 am my kids were outside on the swingset.
This shot is actually from yesterday. Charlie and Rachel played outside for a good part of the afternoon before we had to pick Hannah up from school.
Both Charlie and Hannah LOVE to twist Rachel's swing up and then give her a push and she swings and untwists and she laughs and laughs. I always think she's gonna get sick and throw up or something but she hasn't so far.
I know my kids would love to be enjoying a little bit more winter-like weather right now. Hannah especially misses the snow and asks when we'll ever be able to go sledding again. But this much is for sure - it won't be while we live in Texas.

Hungry Deer

You know the snow must be pretty deep when the deer start eating the dead branches off the scrub oak in our back yard. But they still look pretty healthy. We've had a bunch of them wandering around the hillside behind our yard today.

This sweet little girl is now on DAY 4 of a fever (ranging from 102-104) and no eating. She is a grouch (maybe even worse than me) and making our lives miserable. I know a good mom would probably just feel sorry for her and in a way I do, but I don't really know what else to do for her at this point. She's having her ears checked today just to be on the safe side but I'm pretty sure it's just a yucky virus. Luckily she's still drinking so I'm not so worried about the fact that she hasn't eaten almost any food since Tuesday. I'm getting really used to just carrying her around with me everywhere I go or else I listen to her cry if I dare to set her down. I hope this goes away soon!

I'm a CRAB!

This is a picture of a t-shirt I just bought for Charlie.

(As a totally unrelated side note, I just found some really awesome deals at Old Navy. Everything I got was at least half price. I got some brown cargo cords and some camo pants for Charlie - $4.25 each. Some cute gray sweats with a navy stripe down the leg - $2.25. It was great fun! Check out your local store.)

It's funny because of all the people in our house, he's the LAST person that should be wearing this shirt. I actually should've bought it for me, but they didn't have my size. ANYWAY, I think I've been in a bad mood for about 4 or 5 weeks now and I don't know what to do about it. Every little thing is making me SO mad and I'm irritated and CRABBY all the time. I would blame it on hormones or something lame like that but it's been weeks now. Feel very sorry for my kids. Why do I take my moods out on them? I don't know how to get out of this rut so I'm wondering what you do to cheer yourself up when you're down? How do you keep your "crabbiness" to yourself so your whole family doesn't suffer?
